You can tell because there are fire-breathing dragons, zombie-making ice people, and all of the women have perfectly shaved armpits despite the fact that it's the faux middle ages. But, while George R.R. Martin's epic might have all the trappings of a whimsical, violent fantasy world, the actual plot of the series is based in reality.
